The Doctor Who festive special is set to see the Daleks change in an interesting way – and it could prove disastrous for our heroes.

The fam of four has been split up in the upcoming episode, Revolution of the Daleks, with the Doctor (Jodie Whittaker) in space prison.

The trio have got the help of the returning Captain Jack Harkness (John Barrowman) but still have to figure out how to fight the the Doctor’s oldest enemy.

Teasing the upcoming special, Nick Briggs, the voice actor behind the Daleks, told Metro.co.uk: ‘The thing about the Daleks is they’re always coming up with new schemes and always evolving.

‘This is just another step in this direction. There have been different types of Daleks and different types of Dalek design over the years and this one will present a unique threat to the forces of good, I think I can say!’

It’s the first time Nick has actually worked with Jodie in person, as the last time the Daleks appeared, in Resolution of the Daleks, everything had to be kept completely under wraps.

‘This time around it was extra special for me because, in the last special, Resolution, they were very keen to keep it very secret that the Daleks were in it,’ Nick recalled.

‘Even though I’m not a known face by any stretch of the imagination, there’s a certain section of the audience who do recognise me and have seen me.

‘[Showrunner] Chris Chibnall thought the moment I am seen in Cardiff, all the Doctor Who fans would go, “The Daleks are back!” So last time around, I did all the Daleks in post-production, but this time around they actually got me to the set, which is how I normally do it.

‘The rule of thumb is any piece of scenery you see by a Dalek, I am usually behind it with my headphones on and a microphone and a monitor and I’m watching the action and there’s a speaker on set so that the other actors can hear the Dalek voice with the effect on.’

In the highly-anticipated special, Yaz (Mandip Gill), Ryan (Tosin Cole), Graham (Bradley Walsh) and Captain Jack are set to join forces to fight the Daleks, while the Doctor is trapped.

Meanwhile, the monsters’ new design was put on full display for fans in a recent first look, with the warning: ‘Prepare for maximum extermination!’

We’ve never been more ready!

Revolution of the Daleks airs on New Year’s Day at 6:45pm on BBC One.
