*This article contains spoilers for The Drowning episode four*
The Drowning star Jill Halfpenny has spoken about the Channel 5 drama’s twist ending, saying she ‘did not see it coming’ at all.
The actress plays Jodie (Jill Halfpenny), a mother who lost her son Tom in a tragic accident. Nine years later, she takes more and more dangerous steps to get closer to the teenager she believes could be her lost boy.
The final episode of the show was packed with dramatic moments, as Jodie learned that Daniel was not her son at all, and Max (Rupert Penry-Jones) was innocent all along.
The twist reveal also showed that it was Jodie’s brother Jason (Jonas Armstrong) who was responsible for Tom’s death nine years previously, with the barrister faking the DNA results in the previous episode.
Speaking to Metro.co.uk about the finale’s shock ending, Jill said: ‘I’m not joking, I didn’t see it coming. I really didn’t. Obviously, as I got into episode three, or beginning of four, you start to formulate ideas. It didn’t seem obvious to me until the reveal.’
The actress, known for her previous roles in EastEnders and Waterloo Road, also said she has been blown away by viewer reaction.
‘I think it’s surpassed [my expectations],’ the 45-year-old said. ‘You work really hard on a project and once you’re finished, you never know how it’s going to be received.
‘The reaction so far has been really good. Obviously, it’s important in any thriller to keep an audience wondering about everyone. You have to wonder about every single person’s motives.’
Speaking about the nature of her characters, Jill said that bringing Jodie’s flaws to the fore was key in her preparations.
‘That’s always been really important to me [to show flaws]. It’s such an old fashioned thing to have a lead character that we all love and is never wrong. We’re all really complex, flawed people. And I think it’s important to show that.
‘It’s important to show the messiness of human beings and especially women,’ the actress added.
‘Women, I think, tend to get held to much higher boundaries of what they can and can’t do. It would be boring to watch a perfect person, and just see her just being a victim all the time. You have to see somebody be the master of their own destiny as well.’
Jill also hinted that she would be keen to return to the character in a second series of The Drowning, although future plans have yet to be confirmed.
The Drowning is ready to watch on My5
