Ed Sheeran and Kylie Minogue have collaborated on a poignant song called Visiting Hours, which Ed penned as a tribute to their late shared friend, music executive and Mushroom Group founder Michael Gudinski.

The Shape of You chart-topper jetted out to Australia for Gudinski’s memorial in March, where he first performed onstage with Kylie as the duo covered the popstar’s hits including All the Lovers.

Ed then performed Visiting Hours, which he wrote while in mandatory quarantine ahead of the event, and the star has since recruited both Kylie and singer-songwriter and former Cold Chisel lead vocalist Jimmy Barnes for the track.

Confirming the team-up had happened, ahead of his new album release, Ed explained while speaking on the Ash London LIVE! podcast: ‘From knowing Michael, they are the most important people in Michael’s life musically. He was always saying, “Kylie” or “Jimmy Barnes”.

‘When I was there, I sang with Kylie and then I hung with Jimmy Barnes afterwards and I was like, “You guys have to be on the song.”’

An insider close to Ed told The Sun that he and Kylie had ‘hit it off’ in Australia and that the I Should Be So Lucky singer was ‘flattered’ to have been asked.

They explained: ‘The song was a dedication to Michael and Kylie felt it was right to put her vocals on the track. It was a fitting tribute to the music legend and she was flattered to be asked by Ed.’

Thirty-year-old Ed is currently busy with the release of his new single Bad Habits, which marks his eagerly anticipated return to music as the star took time off after his last album, 2019’s No.6 Collaborations Project, and has since welcomed a daughter, Lyra, with his wife Cherry Seaborn.

This is also the Suffolk-born singer’s first solo album of new material since 2017’s Divide. Although unconfirmed, rumours suggest that this next album will be called Subtract, neatly completing the set of maths-themed album titles.

While Ed might not have been in the limelight much recently until now, he’s still been busy behind the scenes as he revealed he’d written a song for superstar group BTS’ new record.

He’s also loving his role as a new dad, confessing that headlining at Glastonbury doesn’t compare to the ‘everyday joy’ of being a parent.
