Australian Big Brother star Tilly Whitfield was left with scarring and vision loss after attempting a hack for freckles she found on TikTok.
The reality star revealed that she has spent $12,000 (£8,500) in doctor’s bills attempting to correct the damage sustained by using sewing needles and ink to give herself freckles.
Tilly – who starred on the current season of Big Brother in Australia – explained that last August, she had been browsing TikTok when she came across a video teaching viewers how to give themselves freckles that were said to fade within six months.
The tutorial told viewers to use a sewing needle and ink to get their faux freckles, but did not say what ink to get.
Tilly ordered brown tattoo ink on eBay and began pricking her skin in a freckle pattern, going over the marks multiple times as per the TikTok video’s advice.
The 21-year-old told the New York Times: ‘It didn’t hurt at all, so I didn’t think I should stop.’
However, Tilly, from Sydney, later discovered that the ink she bought was counterfeit and contained high levels of lead, and her face swelled up from infection.
She now has severe scarring across her nose and cheeks and briefly lost vision in one eye, and doctors have told her that laser removal is not an option as the brown ink will turn black.
Tilly, who is yet to find a solution to the scarring, said: ‘The main response has been that I’m stupid, and, yeah, I agree.’
After episodes of Big Brother series 13 (which were pre-recorded last October) began airing in April, viewers questioned why Tilly was frequently wearing a blue clay mask over her nose and cheeks, as well as heavy make-up.
In an Instagram post shared in May, Tilly posted a picture showing the extent of her scarring, and explained to her followers: ‘For those asking why I have my blue clay face mask on continuously through out the show this is what my face looked like a week prior to entering the house hence why I always have makeup on and my skin is always covered.
‘This is the result of attempting to remove scarring I inflicted on myself trying to replicate an at home beauty procedure I saw on a tik tok video 2 months before big brother 🤣 who bloody else would manage to do such a thing.
‘Please please don’t try any “DIY” or “at home” beauty procedures I ended up in hospital with temporary loss of vision in my eye due to swelling and was very sick from the infection, not to mention my face was somewhat unrecognisable. Leave it to the professionals.’
She later added: ‘This is deep below surface level scaring and dark pigmentation whilst I’m fortunate enough to not have keloid scaring and the surface of my skin is smooth, the pigmentation is very dark and obvious.’
Tilly spoke to the New York Times to share the dangers of trying out beauty hacks found on TikTok without getting advice from a doctor first.
A number of doctors, dermatologists and surgeons said that they often know when a beauty hack is trending on TikTok, due to the amount of people coming into them with the same issue.
They advised TikTok lovers to reach out to a doctor via an appointment or on social media before trying out any hacks, which can range from useless to dangerous.
Currently, beauty hacks like the one Tilly tried do not have any warning on them on TikTok stating that they are unverified.
So, moral of the story – don’t use a sewing needle to give yourself freckles.
