Amanda Holden has admitted she was told to steal food if she wanted breakfast while on a holiday when she was a child as her family had ‘no money really’.
Describing how some of her ‘favourite memories’ were the ‘idyllic’ camping holidays she spent in Cornwall during her childhood, she also remembered how finances could sometimes be a bit tight.
Speaking on Alan Carr’s Life’s a Beach podcast, the 51-year-old performer shared an occasion when her mum Judith told her and her sister Debbie to pilfer milk and cereal from the breakfast queue as they had run out of money to eat.
The Britain’s Got Talent judge explained: ‘We’d spent all our money on that holiday, and we came back on a ferry and my mum told me to go and nick milk from the queue for breakfast.
‘She was like, “Amanda, you and Debbie, if you want any breakfast, you’ll have to steal it”.’
The West End singer, dancer and actor then revealed that they had done exactly that in order to have Sugar Puffs for breakfast.
‘My mum and dad went without and we nicked – it sounds like the Artful Dodger!’, she joked, referencing the famous young thief from Charles Dickens’ Oliver Twist, before laughingly saying of her admission: ‘She [Judith] is going to batter me!’
It’s in stark contrast to the sorts of holiday experiences Amanda now enjoys with her family, as the star, who shared that Mauritius is her favourite place to go, spoke about how ‘fortunate’ she was to have been able to afford the £2,500 for Covid tests so her family could enjoy a trip to Portugal in June.
Portugal, which was on the green travel list in June, has now been placed on the Government’s amber list, which means travellers must take a Covid test before returning to the UK, complete a passenger locator form and purchase Covid-19 travel tests for day two and day eight after their holiday.
Travellers must also quarantine at home or in the place they are staying for 10 days.
However, Amanda wasn’t shy in holding back her criticism of the travel test system’s costs, which she sees as ‘taking advantage of the British public’ due to its expense and calling for ‘some sort of inquiry’.
Although she said the test fees were ‘worth it’ in this instance so she could enjoy some time abroad with her family, she shared her frustration over recent rules the Government has issued on travel and events.
She said: ‘None of it makes any sense. I have so much goodwill and I’ve abided by every flippin’ rule, but now I’ve gone “no more”.’
Amanda also made the cheeky admission that she likes to sunbathe and swim naked on holiday, all in the privacy of her own villa.
‘I never wear a bikini on holiday but I wouldn’t mix with other nudists. There’s a difference…’
