Liverpool star Trent Alexander-Arnold has indicated he’ll be fit for the start of the Premier League season after a late blow forced him to pulling out of England’s squad for the European Championships.

The defender was selected as part of Gareth Southgate’s 26-man preliminary squad despite suggestions he would be omitted and he was on course to be given a full place in the squad.

However, a thigh injury in England’s final warm-up game meant the defender was forced to withdraw from the squad.

But the Liverpool star says he’s on course to recover in time for pre-season, though he admits the disappointment of missing the tournament remains.

‘Every day is a new step, every day is getting better and getting fitter,’ Alexander-Arnold told the BBC.

‘Going into pre-season will be good. Having a few weeks’ rest, hitting the season and pushing on from there.

‘It’s disappointing for me personally not to be there but it still puts a smile on my face seeing the lads doing well, going far and seeing the nation get behind them.

‘The support everywhere has been amazing. To see that and know all the lads, having been there for a few weeks, I know they’re going to do them proud.’

Southgate has used all three of his other right-back options so far in the tournament, with Reece James, Kyle Walker and Kieran Trippier all getting run outs.

Trippier was used at left-back in the opening game against Croatia but has since reverted to his more traditional role, with Luke Shaw taking over on the other side.

Shaw and Walker are favourites to start against Denmark in the semi-final at Wembley on Wednesday.
