Gareth Southgate has revealed Jadon Sancho’s levels of performance in training have improved since confirmation of his impending transfer to Manchester United was announced earlier this week.

The 21-year-old has been involved in a drawn out transfer saga that has spanned the last three windows with United having coveted the former Manchester City winger for the best part of two years.

A deadlock was finally broken on Thursday and the formalities of a £77million transfer will be completed after England’s involvement at Euro 2020 ends.

The Three Lions are back in action on Saturday evening in Rome and Sancho appears likely to earn his first start of the competition having impressed Southgate in the build-up to such a pivotal game.

Asked if the speculation surrounding Sancho had been a distraction, Southgate told ITV: ‘No. In fact, Jadon over the last seven days has trained at the best level in the time with us.

‘So, you accept there are lots of ongoing transfer situations. Nobody is coming in for talks, nobody is going out for talks. But we can’t stop phones ringing, we can’t stop business happening outside of that, so you have to just trust the players.

‘I haven’t really had a long discussion with him about it at this moment. That story has been going for 12 months really. When everything is confirmed I’m sure I’ll have a chat with him.

‘There’s so much speculation about all of our players I don’t pick up every little individual piece but of course I check in with every player to see how they are. The big thing is he’s been very focused in his training and that’s been good.’
