Kate ‘rushed out of Wimbledon royal box’ after taking call telling her to isolate

The Duchess of Cambridge immediately excused herself from the royal box in Wimbledon’s Centre Court when she learnt she had to isolate, it has emerged.

Kate was cheering on British number one Dan Evans on Friday when she got a call saying she had been in close contact with someone who tested positive for Covid-19.

She left at around 5pm to begin 10 days of self-isolation – as Evans crashed out to American rising star Sebastian Korda in four sets.

The double-jabbed duchess is understood to have taken a lateral flow test before she entered the grounds and returned a negative result, as required of all visitors to Wimbledon.

She was due to join husband Prince William for two events later on Friday to celebrate the 73rd birthday of the NHS.

The prince continued with his plans, meaning the infectious person Kate came into contact with is unlikely to be in the royals’ inner circle.

The Times reported Kate was not ‘pinged’ via the official NHS Covid-19 app.

Instead, she was alerted personally and left her seat next to the Duke of Kent, where she had been chatting with the Body Coach Joe Wicks behind.

It meant she missed watching Britain’s two-time champion Andy Murray, who lost in straight sets to Canadian 10th seed Denis Shapovalov.

A spokesperson for Kensington Palace said: ‘Last week the Duchess of Cambridge came into contact with someone who has subsequently tested positive for Covid-19.

‘Her Royal Highness is not experiencing any symptoms, but is following all relevant government guidelines and is self-isolating at home.’

The spokesperson did not reveal where Kate was when she came into close contact with a Covid patient.

Her only other public engagement last week was on Tuesday to watch England’s 2-0 win over Germany in the Euros, alongside William and their son George.

She took a test and was Covid negative before taking her seat in Wembley Stadium.

Kate now needs to follow strict NHS quarantine rules – but she certainly made the most of her trip to SW19.

The duchess met staff in the Wimbledon museum and delighted punters by joining chefs to serve up strawberry desserts.

She then watched British doubles champion Jamie Murray and his partner Bruno Soares in their first round match on court 14.

The duchess is patron of the All England Lawn Tennis Club and a keen tennis fan, but is now likely to miss out on watching the men’s and women’s finals from Centre Court at the weekend.
