A thief goaded the owner of a cat he’d stolen by posting a video of himself laughing and saying: ‘robbed your cat, come get it back.’
Three-year-old Biscuit, an all white cat with piercing eyes, was snatched in Newbury town centre and paraded around the town.
A clip posted on Snapchat shows a man in a hoodie holding the pet, with a McDonald’s cup and bottle in the other hand, while another man films him and laughs along.
At one point the man is seen near a pub, holding Biscuit under her arms as her legs dangle in an uncomfortable position.
Her owner, Sophie Lightowlers, only became aware she was missing when friends sent her the footage.
‘When I first saw the video I felt physically sick,’ she said. ‘I was absolutely disgusted that someone would treat any animal like that, and then it sunk in that it was my cat and then my concern turned to rage.
‘It still makes me angry to think about because Biscuit is such a friendly cat and she loves attention from strangers. I really feel like they’ve taken advantage of her friendliness to mistreat her.’
Biscuit was eventually freed by the men and Sophie was able to collect her.
The cat was ‘a little traumatised’ at first but has now made a full recovery, Sophie said.
She has reported the incident to the RSPCA and says she’s had no apology from the men, who tried to excuse their behaviour by claiming they thought the cat was a stray.
